A mouse once took a bite out of a bull's tail as he lay dozing. The bull jumped up in a rage and, with his head low to the ground, chased the mouse right across the yard. The mouse was too quick for him, however, and slipped easily into a hole in the wall.
The bull charged the wall furiously again and again, but although he bruised his head and chipped his horns, the mouse stayed safely inside his hole. After a time the bull ge up and sank down to rest again.
As soon as the bull was asleep, the little mouse crept to the mouth of the hole, pattered across the yard, bit the bull again -- this time on the nose -- and rushed back to safety. As the bull roared helplessly the mouse squeaked:

A man once bought a brilliantly-coloured parrot. Instead of locking it up in a cage or chaining it to a perch, he allowed it to fly free all over the house. The parrot was delighted at this and fled from room to room, shrieking and screaming with hiness. At last he settled on the edge of a rich curtain.
"Who on earth are you" said a cross voice from below. "Stop that terrible noise at once."
The parrot saw a cat staring up at him from the carpet.
"I 'm a parrot. I 've just arrived and I 'm to make as much noise as I can," he said.
"Well, I 've lived here all my life," replied the cat ."I was born in this very house and I learned from my mother that it is best to keep quiet here."
"Keep quiet then, "said the parrot cheerfully. "I don't know what you do around here, but I know my job. My master bought me for my voice and I'm going to make sure he hears it."

"Do you see what I mean" asked the father. "if only you stand together no one can hurt you . If you all disagree the whole time and insist on going your separate ways, the first enemy you meet will be able to destroy you. "

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one girl who decided to study judo[柔道] despite the fact that she had lost her left arm in a car accident.
The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. The girl was doing well. So she couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one move.
"Instructor," the girl finally said, "Shouldn't I be learning more moves?"
"This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the instructor replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training.
Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first tournament[比赛]. Surprising herself, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged. The girl deftly[巧妙的] used her one move to win the match. Still amazed by her success, the girl was now in the finals.
This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl eared to be overmatched. Concerned that the girl might get hurt, the referee[裁判] called a time-out. She was about to stop the match when the instructor intervened.
"No," the instructor insisted, "Let her continue."

"You won for two reasons," the teacher answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm."
The girl's biggest weakness had become her biggest strength.

美国动物学家曾经做过这样一个实验：他们把氯化钠药片塞进羊肉里喂狼，狼吃了羊肉后短时间内消化不良，呕吐不止，十分痛苦。尝到了苦头的狼从此对肉羊倒了胃口，改食其它肉类。由于母狼吃什么食物，它的乳汁就具有什么食物的味道，而狼一旦改变了食性，还会影响到幼狼。在狼改变了食性后，动物学家对其进行驯化，用于看守羊群。狼体力好，善于奔跑，忠于职守，能毫不犹豫地撵回失散的羊。羊见了狼，犹如老鼠见了猫，会乖乖的听从狼的摆布。在野外，狼的主要食物是田鼠等有害动物，驯狼牧羊也就间接的保护了森林、草原，有利于生态平衡。

二、三个火堆
严寒的冬天里，一群人点燃了一堆火。大火熊熊燃烧，烤得人浑身暖烘烘的，有个人想：天这么冷，我绝不能离开火，不然我就会被冻死，其他人也都这么想，于是这堆无人添柴的火不久便熄灭了，这群人全被冻死了。
又有一群人点燃了一堆火，其中有一个人想，如果大家都只烤火不检柴，这火迟早也会熄灭，其他人也都这么想。于是，大家都去捡柴，没有人烤火，都被陆续冻死在了捡柴的路上，火最终因缺柴而灭。

1、唯物辩证法认为，整体与部分的联络是客观事物普遍联络的一种形式。两者的地位和功能是不同的。当各部分已有序、合理的结构形成整体时，整体的功能就会大于各部分功能之和。就如同第三个火堆，第三个群体发挥了优化组合的优势，他们在处理取暖与捡柴的矛盾时，取了轮流制度，一半儿取暖，一半儿捡柴，既照顾了整体利益，又兼顾了个体利益，既考虑了长远利益，又照顾了眼前利益，他们办事情选择了最佳方案，实现了最优目标（让火与生命延续到第二年春天），他们的聪明之举不得不令人叹服！当部分以无序、欠佳的结构形成整体时，各部分原有的效能得不到发挥，力量消弱，甚至相互抵消，使整体功能小于各部分之和：像第一、第二火堆和群体，他们要么只顾取暖，无人拣柴，要么只只拣柴，不知烤火，不管哪种情况，对延续火与生命都不是最佳方案，最终都导致了可悲的下场！
2、贡献与索取是相互联络，密不可分的。我们要正确处理好两者的关系，既要对社会有所创造、有所贡献，又要从社会中有所索取，得到必要的满足。如果片面地强调一方而否定另一方就是割裂了两者的关系，是错误的。像第一个群体，只知烤火，不去拣柴，只求索取，不想贡献，割裂了贡献与索取的关系；而第二个群体，只知拣柴，:不知烤火，只讲贡献，不谈索取，同样割裂了贡献与索取的关系，两个群体的错误作法均导致了无法挽回的损失。第三个群体，即讲贡献又讲索取，恰当地处理好了贡献与索取的关系，难怪他们的生命与火能延续到次年春天！

When Gee was about six years old, he was made the wealthy master of a hatchet of which, like most little boys, he was extremely fond. He went about chopping everything that came his way.
One day, as he wandered about the garden amusing himself by hacking his mother's pea sticks, he found a beautiful, young English cherry tree, of which his father was most proud. He tried the edge of his hatchet on the trunk of the tree and barked it so that it died.

Just then Gee, with his little hatchet, came into the room.
